Thomas turns 7

Thomas turned 7 and spent the day in Kommetjie with his Ouma and Oupa. Ouma baked a special cowboy themed cake, he was so excited , look at his face. ...

He wore his crown the whole day and we called him King Thomas.

His great gifts included stockmars, a homemade fishing rod and bow and arrow set, a knitted dinosaur made by me [that had to have an open mouth!] , a new wooden breakfast bowl made by dad.
His first 7 years have now passed and the next phase of his life is about to begin, I hope it is as easy as the first.
He is my special kind and loving child, we feel blessed to have him in our life

Pirates and ship party!

Just before every one arrived we got dressed and Thomas ran out onto the straw bale ship that we had built. This was the starting point for the treasure hunt. He was very excited as he got to wear a button shirt for the first time and was convinced it was because he had turned 6. Sweet assumptions...

Thomi and Olli wasted no time and tucked into their 'treasure' Olli looks like an angel dressed as a pirate, sigh... How does he always look so angelic?

Blowing out the candles of the marzipan[ned] treasure chest.
We had a wonderful day and I loved connecting with my friends, while our children demolished the pirate ship and created houses.
Thanks for comming and joining in on the fun!

Spiced Honey Cake

Thomi, Olli and I baked a cake for Kalla's birthday.

We made a spiced honey cake [IOW- Imbolic Cake] Then had a visit from Terri, Greg, Caleb, Hannah and Sheth. They gave us a great combined birthday present of a beautiful tray, so we invited them to christen the tray and cut the cake. The kids ran outside and picked lavender.
Sweet Hannah was the decorator and did an awesome job! [dont ya think?]

Honey Cake
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 heaping teaspoon allspice
3/4teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground ginger
4 eggs, beaten
1 1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup oil
1 cup raw honey

Preheat oven to 350ºF . Grease and flour a 9 x 13 baking pan. Combine all ingredients.
Mix well, pour into pan,

Then give children the bowl and mixer to lick . [very important part of the recipe!]

Then bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
YUM!

Olivers party and leaving AlbertFalls

Well this was a great day for the kids. Its fantastic that children can have such fun in the midst of chaos! This train track is much bigger that the Cape Town track and has a water bridge and a tunnel. Oliver was so excited that the train was red!

Each of the rides is approx 10min so Karl and I each went once while the boys went twice.

Let me tell you what happened why we were in a state. We woke up to discover that neither the car battery or caravan battery worked any more! This meant that we needed to by a battery before the shops closed [12:00 on a Saturday in this area]This of course is easy except that the shops were far and we had promised that boys a train ride which was arround the corner. The main concern was that we were now heading into the Transkei and needed to know that our car would be reliable.

So never a dull moment...we packed up, push started the bakkie and went for the train ride. All the while the car was idling in the parking lot. [mmm cant lock a car with keys in the ignition] After all this it was close to 12:00 so we rushed to Pietermaritzburg, bought a battery and then headed for the Wild Coast!!! We decded to sleep in Kokstad so that we could head into the Transkei with fresh eyes. The big warnning that we kept getting was "watch out for cows, goats, children and potholes!" mmm this should have been enough of a warning but NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO there is nothing that THE DEHNINGS cant see of do! So of we went for an adverture of a lifetime!
