I am pretty sure it is a Pyrgomorphidae grasshopper. I have not got my insect book up here, but see this page:http://www.biodiversityexplorer.org/insects/orthoptera/pyrgomorphidae/ Was it similar? They are fantastic and a bt scary!

What is that thing? It is much bigger than many Vermont birds....
It is a grasshopper, though I dont know what the scientific name is, I will have to reasearch it.

My daughter LOVES insects and would go bonkers having this one as a pet. It's huge! And it's colors look beautiful!
